The Sweetgrass itself first appeared in 1996 in Big Timber, MT at Sweetgrass Farms. In Belgium, this color pattern as existed for hundreds of years. A Clear example of one of these turkeys appears in an old painting; by the Flemish master Joachim Beuckelaars, from 1566. Our strain was developed by Kevin Porter by selectively breeding this line down from the original Sweetgrass to a much better body type that can breed naturally without artificial insemination and are also very hardy. They have a heavily marked Royal Palm pattern with Chestnut Red. They are a very stunning looking bird. Mature Toms weigh around 33 pounds and hens around 18 pounds.
